While most fashion styles either come and go for good, or come in and out of fashion on some kind of rotational basis, there are some items of clothing that never seem to be too far from the top. The leather jacket is one of these items as it has hung around for over sixty years and in that time has never strayed into unfashionable territory, occasionally popping back into the limelight from new modernizations and celebrity exposure.

The choice of which leather jacket to buy comes down to a few factors, not least of which being your personal tastes, though if you are looking for something fashionable then you should do a least a little research beforehand. You can buy a jacket in any shape, size or style, from trench coats to hip lengths, padded shoulders to tight fit motocross jackets, though there are only three primary styles to choose from. To make your choice a little easier to make, the three main styles of leather jacket are explained below.

If you are the kind of person who likes to buy clothes that look worn, then probably the style of leather jacket most suited to you would be the distressed style. Designed to look like they have been well used, distressed leather jackets, although not unfashionable per se, have not been considered trendy for a good few years, although it is not unlikely for this to change in the future.

Another very popular style of jacket, not only with bikers but also a variety of people, is the motocross jacket. Initially, this style of jacket was first used by motorcyclists as protective clothing due to its strong inherent characteristics and durability. To begin with, bikers preferred leather jackets and trousers (commonly known collectively by the term ‘leathers’) made out of cattle hide as it is very strong, though recently there has been a trend towards other materials and other hides such as kangaroo hide which is very strong but also light.

Historically one of the most popular forms of clothing of the last one hundred years in the western world has got to be the leather bomber jacket. The leather bomber jacket was first designed for pilots to endure the colder temperatures of flying at high altitudes, though it quickly became a fashion icon and has remained a very popular piece of clothing ever since. Today, a number of the bigger fashion labels are releasing modern styled bomber jackets meaning that even after more than sixty years, the leather bomber jacket is as popular as ever.
