No child left flat-footed?

Many parents worry when they see your child's feet and appears too flat. They are even more upset if one or most have a painful flatfoot. They ask whether the pain experienced as a child can be avoided.

Unfortunately, many pediatricians tell everyone that they will "grow" outside the flat feet. This is a terrible misjustice to the millions of children who have feet symptomatic, structural flat will not "grow out" and leads often many years of pain and disability when treatment can reduce suffering signifiacntly.

Flat foot is common in children and in fact represents various types of inheritance foot types. Although these types of feet differ in many of its features, all share a common flattening or collapsing of the arch. Many children with foot plane no symptoms, but some may have severe aches and pains.

Signs and symptoms of pediatric flat foot include:
– Pain and tenderness foot, leg and knee
– Inclination to the outside of the heel
– Difficulty in running and walking, or just fun, "seeks" run
– Footwear excessive and difficulty fitting shoes
– Constant complaints to run or participate in sports

What are the different types of foot plane?
– Symptomatic or asymptomatic
– Flexible (ie, that seem to have an arch when unloaded but fully collapses on weight), which is the most common and is associated with many overuse injuries in child athletes.
– Rigid (arch is always stiff and flat), less common and usually due to the structure Abnormal bone or bone growth during development.

How is flat foot diagnosed?
In the pediatric flatfoot, the podiatric surgeon foot and ankle is on your child and perform a complete biomechanical exam to see how the foot, knees and hip function. The films are taken to evaluate the growth plates and the bone growth. Often, an MRI or CT scan are necessary to fully evaluate this complex deformity.

How is flat foot treated?
In asymptomatic flat foot, no treatment is needed except sturdy shoes suitable gears to relieve stress. Secondary symptoms of "Charlie horses" or leg cramps, tired feet, and knee and hip pain should be discussed with the parents.

In painful flat feet, treatment is necessary. No child should be in pain from his feet. Modification of the activity, footwear, exercises stretching, anti-inflammatories and arch supports are the mainstay of therapy. Mant times, significant flat feet require custom functional brace and physical therapy symptom relief more aggressive. Obesity increases the level of foot pain. Weight loss is always recommended before surgery because of the high incidence of foot painful levels in obese children.

Surgery should only be an option for pediatric flat foot if the child is having severe difficulty in walking or running, has suffered at least six months of aggressive treatment and has a significant deformity.
