Things to Consider When Choosing a Doula

Birth Doula Support

Put simply, a birth doula serves a woman throughout the duration of her birth to offer physical and emotional support, along with information regarding birthing options before and during labor.  A birth doula is skilled in non-medical techniques to help labor progress and ease birth pains, along with methods of relaxation and comfort.  In addition a birth doula take an enormous amount of pressure off of the partner, allowing him (or her) to be the emotional support the mother so needs.  Birth doulas practice at hospitals, birth centers and homebirths, and significantly decrease a mother's chances of c-section, long labor, overall intervention use, postpartum depression and maternal satisfaction with birth.

Things to Consider When Choosing a Doula

Hiring a birth or postpartum doula can be a wonderful choice for you and your family during your transition to parenthood or adding additional children to your home. There are some things you should consider when hiring a doula to ensure she is the right doula for you:

- Do you easily get along with this person and do you feel that she would be a calming presence in stressful situations?  Do you and your partner or support person(s) "click" with her?  This is perhaps the most important thing to consider when choosing a doula.  She should be someone who you feel comfortable and at ease with.  The last thing you want is someone who you believe could potentially cause you more stress or tension.

- What kind of training and experience does this doula have?  Keep in mind that certification does not equal experience, and vise versa.

- How accessible is this person to you for answering questions and phone support?

- What is their philosophy of birth, and postpartum & baby care?  Although a doula's job is to support your decisions, whatever they maybe, every doula has a certain bias and you may be better suited to find someone who holds similar beliefs as you do.

- What other services is your doula able to offer you (for instance- birth and postpartum support, natural parenting coaching, childbirth education, etc...)?

It is important to remember that you may not find the perfect match in your first interview.  Don't be discouraged!  Continue to interview doulas until you find the person you are comfortable with and confidant in- it will make all the difference!
